Installing BAR SINISTER @ Tiger Strikes Asteroid with artist Michael Macfeat!

Michael Macfeat: BAR SINISTER
Curated by Terri Saulin
April 6 – 29, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, April 6th, 2012, 6-10pm
Hours:  Saturday and Sunday, 2pm-6pm and by appointment
319A North 11th Street 2H, Philadelphia, PA 19107

Michael Macfeat's prints and sculptures in Bar Sinister concern themselves with the issue of color, one through artifice and the other through the natural process of patina and entropy. They bracket the temporal extremes of twenty years of Macfeat's oeuvre. An ambiguity of meaning is apparent. Neither the sculptures nor the images are obvious but often stem from his life long love affair with reading. They rely on Macfeat's history as a bibliophile, accumulating and cultivating a compendium of quotes both visual and verbal. They become color coded strategic military maps drawn from his interest in 'Pataphysics, the Situationists and Psychogeography. Once codes are cracked and coordinates deciphered, the connection modulates between the Dialectical Materialism of the Arte Povera group and an intellectual
stroll through the arcades with the flâneurs, leisurely  walking lobsters at the end of the leash. Allow yourself ample time to savor and linger over beautifully turned words and ideas.

- Curators Note
My first contact with Michael Macfeat was back in the early 1980’s. He was invited to lecture at Moore College of Art and Design by our mutual friend Bill Walton. Mike told revolutionary tales and offered proof that it was possible to buck the system and take control of the white cube. Early in his career, Mike was busy blazing trails and creating models for DIY cooperative spaces like those cozily nestled at 319 N. 11th Street. He was curating shows and procuring alternative spaces, offering sheet rocking labor to property owners in order to show his stable of friends/artists. At a show he arranged in an empty store front on South Street, he even went as far as dressing two art handlers in white lab coats to switch paintings throughout an entire opening. This delicately choreographed action made it possible to squeeze 80 pieces into a space that would only hold 20. At a leisurely pace, the two handlers were able to change every painting in the gallery, creating an entirely different exhibition every 45 minutes. This is just one example of Macfeat’s brilliant, poetic and simultaneously hilarious approach to Culture Trade.

Presenting the work of Michael Macfeat at Tiger Strikes Asteroid is an honor and a long overdue Thank you for his inspiration and friendship.

 Hello Friends, Family & Colleagues,
After four years of rewarding hard work, Matt Frock (my awesome husband) has written and illustrated Love Squared, a lovingly crafted work of fiction told in words and pictures for ages nine to ninety.

He is trying to raise the initial costs of running a first edition printing through "Kickstarter." Please consider visiting the link & supporting this wonderful project through your pledge/purchase of a signed, first edition copy of the book, or consider some of the other pledge options including original art works offered as rewards for your gracious support.

There are only 20 days left to fund this project!!!

Please check out Matt's Kickstarter book launch HERE!

WHAT IS KICKSTARTER???

Kickstarter is the world's largest funding platform for creative projects. Every week, tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and other creative fields.

A new form of commerce and patronage. This is not about investment or lending. Project creators keep 100% ownership and control over their work. Instead, they offer products and experiences that are unique to each project.

All or nothing funding. On Kickstarter, a project must reach its funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands. Why? It protects everyone involved. Creators aren’t expected to develop their project without necessary funds, and it allows anyone to test concepts without risk.

Each and every project is the independent creation of someone like you. Projects are big and small, serious and whimsical, traditional and experimental. They’re inspiring, entertaining and unbelievably diverse. We hope you agree... Welcome to Kickstarter!

      VALENTINES DAY IS ALMOST HERE!

What could possibly be a better gift than a book about falling in Love & saving the world! Supporting a great project on Kickstarter is heartwarming. A good deed, indeed! For a generous & loving pledge of 25$, you will receive a copy of “Love Squared” signed with a message from the author. (my awesome husband Matt Frock)

Can you buy multiple books?

Hecks yes!
Just add $20 to any pledge for an extra book!

Happy Love Day!!!
(Feel Free to share the Love2 with friends!)
Thank you so much for your consideration!

Hello Friends,
(Please forgive this shameless-self-promotion-request!)

I have just completed an application for "The West Prize."
In short, The West Prize is a $25,000 prize, voted on & picked by the public through an iPhone app. (
It is a peculiar competition in that patrons can only "vote" if they have an Iphone.)
The "app" is free & can be found here.

(Like most new technology there are issues with getting the App to load consistently. If you get it to load, go to search, type in my last name, "Saulin" & then click on image of my drawing. My statement should come up, scroll to the right and the images will follow. There are 10 w/ a pink-highligted
"I Like" ... for the most votes, click "I like" for each image.... Oh boy, what a pain this is! Thanks for trying & for your patience. They never make "winning" easy! hahaha!)

The artwork with the most votes by May 14th will win $25,000!

For the "DIRTY DETAILS" of the whole process go here!
In the meantime, if you have the time and are so inclined, please vote for me.

Everyone has dreams, visions, memories that have an impact on their day-to-day lives. Periodically, one stumbles upon an eerie idea that stays with them, affecting all who experience it.  While driving through the countryside, Katie Locke happened upon a sign that declared, "I had a dream I was being chased by something big and invisible." This statement has inspired nine artists from Moore College of Art & Design to bring to fruition haunting but beautiful work.

Gerard Brown: “ ” @ Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Opening Reception Friday, November 4, 2011 5 – 10pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tiger Strikes Asteroid is pleased to announce their November exhibition
Gerard Brown
“ ”
November 4 – December 31, 2011
Opening Reception Friday, November 4, 2011 5 – 10pm

PHILADELPHIA – Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Philadelphia’s artist-curated exhibition space presents “ ”, an exhibition of new works on paper by Philadelphia artist Gerard Brown. The show opens with a reception on First Friday, November 4, 2011. The gallery is located at 319 N. 11th Street, Philadelphia, PA. Gallery hours are Saturday & Sunday 2pm-6pm & by appointment. For additional information and images please contact our staff or gallery director Matt Sepielli, at tel. (484)-469-0319, tigerstrikesasteroid@gmail.com

The exhibit of paintings and prints continues Brown’s exploration of the intersections between reading and seeing, and its punctuated title (which can be read as “blank quote” or “smart quotes”) alludes to the use of others' words in the work. Two large pieces dominate the show; a multi-panel drawing in gouache on paper translates Frank O’Hara’s 1957 poem “To the Harbormaster” into nautical code flags, and a 32-part digital print conflates images of oceanographic satellite photography with James McBride’s bestselling 1996 memoir, “The Color of Water”. “I want to know what happens when things are misunderstood,” Brown says, “when messages that are encoded are not seen as meaningful, or when an attempt to communicate directly is seen as a formal gesture.” During the run of the exhibit, the gallery will release an essay by artist David Stephens and art writer Robin Rice that discusses the works.

Gerard Brown is an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Foundation Department at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. A longtime participant in the Philadelphia art community, he contributed art reviews to the Philadelphia Weekly and Seven Arts magazine in the 1990s and, with City Paper critic Robin Rice, began eyelevel, a newsletter of art criticism that appeared occasionally throughout the late 1990s. He has organized exhibits and contributed essays to galleries and museums throughout the region, and is currently the Resident Scholar at the Center for Art in Wood, where he organized “Turning to Art In Wood: A Creative Journey” in observation of the newly re-named organization’s 25th anniversary. This is Brown’s third one-person exhibit, and his first in Philadelphia.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid is an artist-run and artist-curated exhibition space located at 319A North 11th Street, home to Vox Populi, Marginal Utility, Grizzly Grizzly, and Progressive Sharing. Our goal is to connect the Philadelphia art scene to the global art community by showing the work of emerging artists from Philadelphia and other cities such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. In addition to its exhibition programs, Tiger Strikes Asteroid maintains Flat File, a collection of small-scale artworks by past, current and future exhibitors. All works in Flat File are under 9 x 12 inches and are available for sale. The collection may be viewed by appointment.

PROOF OF MY UNKNOWING EYES: Amy Beecher / Susan Bricker @ Tiger Strikes Asteroid

Proof of My Unknowing Eyes
July 8 – 31, 2011

Essay by Jeffrey Scott Matthews
Essay by Mathew Schneier

PHILADELPHIA- Tiger Strikes Asteroid is pleased to
announce the opening of its July exhibition, Proof of My
Unknowing Eyes, featuring the works of Susan Bricker
and Amy Beecher.

The showʼs essayist, Jeffrey Scott Mathews, notes:

In the work of Amy Beecher and Susan Bricker, we are presented with visual criteria
establishing both presence and absence in the material and in the immaterial. In both of the artistsʼ work, there is a manipulation of paint, yet there exists an elusive and supernatural component to the work that suggests a tenuous relationship with the traditional or fundamentalist modes of abstraction and representation.

About the artists:
Amy Beecher received her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University and
her BA, Visual Art with Honors, Brown University, Providence, RI. She has exhibited
and curated widely in the United States and currently resides in New York City. A
portion of Amy Beecher's work for this exhibition was expertly printed by Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.

Susan Bricker was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her MFA in Painting, from Cranbrook Academy of Art and
her BFA in Painting at San Francisco Art Institute. Bricker also has a BA in Psychology from The University of Oregon. She has exhibited widely in the US and abroad recently at Mixed Greens, New York, NY and Second Home Projects, Berlin, Germany

Uncle Guido Has Ideas About the BP Oil Spill. LET'S FIX IT!!!

Hi to all reading this message.
Most of you probably know by now that BP's latest attempt at plugging the run away oil well has failed. It sounds like they really don't have much hope of shutting it off any time soon. So, that's where my idea comes in. Actually, I heard another engineer from Germany proposing a version of this idea on a radio talk show two weeks age. His idea was dismissed as the host was most interested in getting him to quote Schwarzenegger. It is no matter who gets the credit, just let's get it plugged. The idea is to put a nitrogen freeze plug on the pipe. Being a retired nuclear engineer, I am quite familiar with this process. We use it all the time to block off large pipes leading to the reactor when we have to cut into a line to do repairs. Draining the water out of a nuclear reactor is something you don't want to do, so we know from much experience that this works. Basically what we do is wrap a coil of tubing around the outside of the pipe to be frozen and run liquid nitrogen through tubing for an hour or so. At minus 370 some degrees, it doesn't take long for the water to be frozen, forming a water tight plug. then we can cut into the pipe downstream of the plug to do our repair work.

The situation at the bottom of the Gulf is a little different, since very little of the line we need to isolate is sticking up out of the ocean bed, but since the end is already open, instead of putting the coil around the outside, the robots they have down there could be used to insert a loop of nitrogen piping down into the throat of the pipe as far as they can possibly get it. Then it's simply a matter of pumping the liquid nitrogen through this loop as long as it takes to form an ice (actually frozen oil) plug. The time it takes to do that is just a function of the surface area of the nitrogen tubing, the flowrate of the oil and the flowrate of the nitrogen, but it will do the job. We know from the many different piping configurations that nitrogen freeze plugs have been used successfully in the past. The last failed solution offered an inkling to this possibility. That plan was the 100 ton top hat that engineers placed over the busted pipe. The idea was to collect the oil in this big concrete box as it exited the pipe and then direct it through an outlet pipe from the box, to tankers on the surface. Well, why this failed was because hydrocarbon gases in the oil separated from the oil at the exit from the box and began to freeze due to the very low temperatures at these ocean depths. And we're only talking about temperatures of around 32 degrees folks, not minus 376 degrees. so the nitrogen will work. We just need somebody in a position of authority to pick up the ball and run with this idea as another approach if what they are doing next (putting a heated, smaller box over the broken well pipe) fails.

So this is where you all come in. Let's use this fantastic new social networking device to flood the people in charge of this environmental nightmare with requests, no scratch that, with demands that they put a team of engineers together to work out all the details of installing a freeze plug, should the revised top hat approach fail and have it ready to go immediately if not sooner. If after reading this and you agree with me that it's worth a try and know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who could get message into the ear of someone who could make it happen, I urge you to forward this to that someone. I thank you in advance for all the pelicans and oysters who are too busy trying to keep their young from dying to send you this message themselves.

Warmly,
Charles Edwards

Terri Saulin: Lines of Flight

September 17 to October 20, 2009

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 17, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Artist talk begins at 7:15 p.m.

Flipping, deleting, expanding, speeding up, slowing down, layering and distilling visual material into art pieces, Terri Saulin creates artwork organic in nature and layered with meaning. Her interest in biology, botany, classical music, geology, and gastronomy are evident in every nook and crevice of her densely textured ceramic pieces. Although her process begins in sculpture, it develops into drawing (a backward play on the traditional preliminary sketch to final sculpture). Drawings and plaster prints, supplemented by their ceramic references will be exhibited in Lines of Flight.

Kitchen Up-Grade, Walls Set and Gravel Fill

WOW! After about 13 years it feels strange to have real cabinets and some counter space. This is a temporary up-grade made possible by Uncle Guido. He's been renovating his old apartments and graciously donated fixtures and cabinets to me. Amazing! It's better than it's ever been and only partly finished. We plan to use the new counter spaces as a test to practice pouring concrete counter tops...for the even newer "dream kitchen."
...baby steps....

Well on my Birthday, we took down the kitchen wall.
For Carl's...we worked on the foundation for the new addition.
Ms. Karen made a delicious chocolate angel food cake w/ strawberries.

The walls went up without a hitch!

...secured with bolts....

...all buttoned up and ready for the vapor lock and gravel.
...after I finish some masonry work!

It took one and a half tons of gravel to fill the foundation.
...lots of shoveling
...Uncle Guido dumping
...Is it beer-o'clock yet???
NO...GET TO WORK !

...finally finished and ready for the decking.

Amazing Progress: Inside and Out!

Well, in the middle of March I was beginning to feel pretty stressed out. It seemed like every other hour the entire back of the house was off. The thin layer of plywood between us and the outside world was seemingly permanent and offered the neighborhood stray cats easy entrance to the basement. Grace Jones was hissing at the door and I stopped making late night trips to the kitchen for water. I was a'scared!!! (On this particular day...sorry for the graphic description...but, I essentially P'd outside as there was no bathroom wall!)

Each time we opened up the back of the house, a concrete cap was being formed and poured. This was one of Carl's favorite jobs, next to busting things up. Even though the mess was frustrating, the holes were becoming smaller and easier to cover. Closer to being able to begin the foundation!!!

The dirt pile was increasing exponentially and as we got closer to foundation pouring time...more dirt was heaped on the pile.

It was dumpster time. We filled one 10 Cu.Yd. with the wood and plaster debris. We ordered a 15 footer for the dirt, brick and concrete.

It was not a barrel full of monkeys style fun.

Each trip from the yard and down the driveway got longer and longer.

The job made everything hurt! We compared bruises and aches a la Indiana Jones and were thrilled to be done.

(I must confess, I was really into pushing the wheelbarrow...it was a first for me!)

Here is some of Carl's excellent concrete form work!
Before:

After:

Journeyman Carl did such excellent work Uncle G. decided it was'a da' time to getta' him a tool belt of his own!

It inspired great pride. I think he's going to leave the Bagel Bakery and go off and get a new job...with a drill!

The dirt pile grew again while making final preparations to pour the footings. I could not bear losing my Butterfly bush and Peonies forever. So...I dug them out. In the process I learned how crazy nature is.

I found oodles of Crocuses, Lilies, Daffodils and Tulips that were growing like albino asparagus under the heap of dirt. We dug up as many as we could and put them out front and they are doing well!

Saving the Peonies....

Uncle Guido worked tirelessly and when the inspector came to check out the footings before the pour...he gave it a double thumbs up and said it was some q-u-a-l-i-t-y workmanship!

We mixed approximately 43 bags of concrete to pour the footings. They came out expertly. Uncle Guido is good!

Each pour was 2 fifty pound bags. Here is the first one!!!

The agony before the victory...

It went much quicker than we thought. We started around 7:45 am and completed it by 12 pm!
Here it is 1/3 done...

Almost....done....
Carl...go mixa one more....

Finally done, ready for a last smoothing....

Now you...go clean up!

Now you...pass out!
